Tool summary

Name of the tool
Design Guidance/Design code

Description of the tool
A design guidance or design code is a generic method of obtaining a unity and coherence within a development. The level of detail within a strategy can vary from being quite rigid, for example prescribing fence types for new housing developments, to less prescriptive codes that describe a general concept.

"The aim of traditional urban codes is to ensure that the actions of many participants over time result in coherent wholes, while allowing for great variety and differentiation. Codes can be used to specify certain geometric parameters or ´building block´ elements, allowing for a wide range of uses whilst emphasising the way in which structures form civic space. The Prince´s Foundation has worked on the development of codes for Llandarcy, South Wales and Upton, Northampton" http://www.princes-foundation.org/projects.html

In the case of the Millennium Coastal Park a design concept was created because: "The linear nature of the Coastal Park means that strong unifying themes and elements are need. ….Throughout the park, public art will be commissioned, to help interpret the special character and culture of this stretch of coastline. In particular, the natural and industrial heritage of the town and its hinterland will be expressed. ….All elements of the landscape design have been inspired by the powerful images of the estuary landscape. Sea-shell spirals and organic sweeping curves, groynes and timer walls all feature in the layouts".
