Tool application

Name of the tool
Lifetime Homes

Who applied the tool in the case?
The tool was applied to the project by Colin King, Senior Development Officer, Housing Strategy Unit, Cardiff County Council (CCC) and his colleagues working on the project.

Time taken to fully apply the tool
This is a tool that should be included in the design process of a house or housing development. When first used the time required for implementing the tool will be significantly longer than in later applications. In other European Countries a number of the requirements might already be standard practice and therefore the time required for reworking plans to accommodate the design features will be reduced.

Any other interesting information about the tool
These tools provide straightforward guidance for the external and internal layout of a home, safety and security measures and sight modifications. Colin King would recommend the use of this tool (and the others used in the Angelina Street case study).

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation suggest that "If all homes over the next 30 years were built to these standards, the quantifiable benefits to the country [UK] would average around £250 per dwelling, and there would also be significant additional non-quantifiable benefits" this would be achieved through reduced expenditure on adaptions and reduced need for the moving of people to residential homes. This tool is therefore of significant relevance to Local authority housing providers.
