9 of the 12 buildings within a neighbourhood in Haarlem were renovated. These were insulated and provided with a sustainable heating system (solar panels, heating pumps and energy storage in the soil underneath the buildings (apr. 120 m. deep).
A social project was also underway together with a project to renew the gardens of the complexes. The last project that started in this neighbourhood was a project to collect waste in containers underneath the surface. The collecting points of the waste can be filled anytime of the day or night. This prevents waste being left out on the street.
The tool used to start up these projects was a plan for the whole neighbourhood of Schalkwijk (apr. 30.000 inhabitants). There is a plan to restructure Schalkwijk in a sustainable way. A plan is not sustainable when it is uneconomic, not social and/or not takes the environment under consideration. Plans are selected by these topics and will be evaluated by the local goverment, but also with the people who were involved by making the plans. What tools were used to assess sustainability? DCBA scheme. More information
