Secured by Design
Who applied the tool in the case?
This tool is designed to be utilised at a technical/project management level and was implemented as such in both the PETUS case studies of Angelina Street Butetown Regeneration Scheme and New Tredegar Regeneration Scheme. In Angelina Street members of the Housing Strategy and Development Section of Cardiff County Council, who were responsible for the development implemented the tool.
Time taken to fully apply the tool
The first time implementation of the tool will obviously take longer than the following implementations. However, the use of the tool should just become a part of the designing stage of a development rather than a project requiring specific concentration.
Any other interesting information about the tool
All Welsh Assembly SHG funded social housing has to meet the standards of Secured by Design. Although the Angelina Street case study was not SHG funded, the council decided to meet the standards.
According to ACPO & ACPO CPI, research shows that Secured by Design can reduce burglary and car crime by 50% and criminal damage by 25%.
The Dutch Police have adopted the Secured by Design initiative under the title Politiekeurmerk - Veilig Wonen (Police Marque - Secured Housing). This website http://www.politiekeurmerk.nl is in Dutch only.
