The guide is concerned with how the planning, design and management of the physical environment can enhance quality of life, promote social inclusion and husband natural resources.
Within the guide can be found two checklists/appraisals – in chapter 2 The Neighbourhood Checklist (Community Checklist and Investors Checklist) and in chapter 3.8 The Neighbourhood Appraisal. This checklist is for
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD APPRAISAL.
Specific topic Neighbourhood appraisal is needed when the area is likely to experience considerable change. The change might be the result of regeneration policies, new housing/commercial allocations, or profressive restructuring over a considerable time.
The appraisal is designed to assist and validate policy forumulation. Its purpose is to show:
• What the current problems are and how serious they are
• How effective current policies are at tackling those problems
• How the various issues and policies are interconnected
• What the capacity or potential for change is
