Framework for system analysis of sustainable urban water management

Description of the tool
Sustainable criteria, to analyze and compare systems, were classified into 5 categories: (1) hygienic and of public health, (2) social and cultural, (3) environmental, (4) economic (5) functional and technical. For each criterion one or more indicators were suggested. For most of the indicators the contribution to various environmental effects and resource utilisation by the urban water and waste water used in Sweden today is presented. These values are compared to the impact of Swedish society in total (normalisation) to demonstrate which criteria are the most critical ones with regard to the water and waste water system. Priority set of criteria and associated methods are settled on.
