Environmental monitoring has been introduced in Breda in order to follow the environmental policy on a systematically and continuous manner, to make reports and to help steer it.

Indicators have been nominated for eight themes - soil, air, water, energy, noise, nature, garbage and external security. These indicators are followed over several years. They are evaluated to follow the evolution of a specific environmental aspects, and if necessary to steer that evolution to obtain the wished results.

As many as ninety indicators have been nominated, varying from the occurrence and distribution of a kind of plant (representing dryness of the soil), the extent and kind of nuisance that people experience from several types of noise sources (traffic, industry, etc.) and the composition of household garbage.
